At 2 metres in length and up to 150 kilograms in weight, the black bear is a powerful animal. The good news is that they are, by nature, reclusive and try to avoid contact with humans. Countering that is the fact that male bears may cover a territory as broad as 140 square kilometres in search of food (and female bears), and that Algonquin Park has estimated that there is one bear for every 3-4 square kilometres. So, encountering a black bear in Muskoka is not an uncommon event. In our painstaking research on black bears we learned that they are omnivores, which means they will eat anything.
